Sound, Physiology and Care
An emerging health and research initiative exploring how sound interacts with the autonomic nervous system through community-based practice and collaborative research.
As part of the Tree of Life Health & Research Center, Maia Earth has begun a small-scale program exploring how carefully structured sound experiences relate to the body's autonomic nervous system. While still in its early stages, the initiative combines community-based practice with the gradual development of a research methodology designed to better understand individual physiological responses to sound.
The first phase of the program has involved a small number of participants, beginning with members of Maia Earth's own team. During each session, participants wear Polar H10 heart rate sensors, allowing physiological information to be recorded before, during, and after the listening experience. Rather than seeking immediate conclusions, the project focuses on carefully building a protocol that integrates observation, biofeedback, and long-term documentation.
This work forms part of an ongoing collaboration with research partners in Germany, who are supporting the development of the program's data management and analysis system. Together, the partnership seeks to establish a structured framework through which physiological information can be securely organized, explored, and gradually translated into meaningful research questions.
Alongside this methodological work, the program has also begun to accompany individuals from the host barangay who are facing health-related challenges. In one of the first long-term cases, sound sessions were combined with periods of rest at Maia Earth's health and retreat center and a simple whole-food dietary approach centered on green smoothies. Rather than representing a standardised treatment, these experiences contribute to a broader process of learning about how different elements of care may work together while remaining attentive to each individual's circumstances.
As the program continues to develop, Maia Earth is in dialogue with the Barangay Health Center to explore how this methodology might gradually become available to more residents through future collaborations. At the same time, the protocol is being prepared for implementation at Wellnessland Health Center in Cebu through Maia Earth's longstanding partnership with Dr. Romy Paredes, creating opportunities for the methodology to be explored across different settings while continuing to evolve through shared practice and research.
By combining physiological observation, lived experience, and collaborative inquiry, the initiative seeks to develop practical knowledge that can support future approaches to health while remaining grounded in the realities of everyday care.
