Bahay Pangarap: Dreaming, Resting and Learning

Weekly Sound Sessions at Bahay Pangarap

Building on the educational partnership established with Bacungan National High School, Maia Earth introduced a new initiative during the school year of 2025: weekly sound sessions for students from across the school. Held inside Bahay Pangarap, the earthen classroom collaboratively built through the previous natural building project, these gatherings created a quiet space within the school week where students could simply pause, rest, and listen.

Each session lasted between twenty and thirty minutes. Small groups of students visited Bahay Pangarap, lay comfortably on the floor, and experienced carefully curated sound journeys. The sessions became a regular part of the school rhythm, offering a different kind of learning environment—one centered not on performance or assessment, but on presence, attentive listening, and direct experience.

For more than a decade, Maia Earth has been exploring the relationship between sound, human physiology, and wellbeing through research, community programs, and educational initiatives. This ongoing work is grounded in a growing body of research suggesting that our physiological state influences how we pay attention, process information, engage creatively, and interact with others. Moments of rest and regulation can support the conditions in which curiosity, imagination, and learning are more likely to emerge. Bringing these ideas into the school created an opportunity to explore sound not only as an artistic medium, but also as a simple practice that encourages students to notice how different states of body and mind shape the way they learn and experience the world.

The program was intentionally simple. There were no expectations for students to achieve particular outcomes or respond in a specific way. Instead, the sessions invited each participant to observe their own experience, recognising that people relate to sound differently and that meaningful learning often begins with careful observation rather than immediate conclusions.

By offering these weekly gatherings within the school environment, the partnership continued to explore how wellbeing can be supported through small, consistent practices that complement everyday education. Alongside the creative and scientific learning already developed through the MAPEH collaboration, the sessions offered another perspective: that education can also include opportunities to rest, to listen, and to cultivate the conditions that help learning, creativity, and self-understanding flourish.
